"Sometimes it's hard, trying to make art you know you can sell without feeling that you are selling it out. And then sometimes it's hard to sell the art that you have made honestly without regard to whether or not anyone will ever want to buy it. You hope to spend your life doing what you love and need and have been fitted by nature or God or your protein-package to do: write, draw, sing, tell stories. But you have to eat."

Michael Chabon, Maps and legends

"In all sorts of areas of our life, we enhance the quality of our lives by going for the slow option, the path which takes a little bit of effort."

Philip Hensher
"Why handwriting matters"
The missing ink

"Hannah & her sisters"
Woody Allen

But it's exactly that vitriol and its unacceptable nature that Twain intended to capture in the book as it stands. Perhaps this is not a book for younger readers. Perhaps it is a book that needs careful handling by teachers at high school and even university level as they put it in its larger discursive context, explain how the irony works, and the enormous harm that racist language can do. But to tamper with the author's words because of the sensibilities of present-day readers is unacceptable. The minute you do this, the minute this stops being the book that Twain wrote.
